The Summer Slide

The Summer Slide

No the summer slide is not a water park feature.  It is a slide in students' math and reading achievement from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next.

To avoid the summer slide, you can:

1.  Enroll your child in a summer school program or a summer camp that includes academics.
2.  Provide learning opportunities like library time at the public library and check out books for summer reading.  Information about the summer reading programs at the library was sent home prior to the end of the school year and is available on the Menomonie Public Library web site.
3.  Check out age appropriate on line academic games/activities.  Always make sure students have some supervision on the internet.
4.  Make math a game.  Ask older children to estimate the grocery bill when shopping.  Ask younger children to count, add, subtract when doing chores with animals or in the garden with fruits and vegetables.
5.  Do an internet search for fun games and activities that require some age appropriate reading, word work and math skills.
